Where to shoot

The Best Pre-Wedding Shoot Locations in Jodhpur

Most location lists for Jodhpur are written by people who have never carried a camera up to Mehrangarh at six in the morning. They tell you a place is "beautiful" and stop there — which is useless when you are trying to plan a day that actually works.

This is the version we give our own couples. Where the light is good and when, what permission you need, when the crowds arrive, and what will go wrong if you plan it badly. We shoot at all of these.

One piece of advice before the list: pick two, maybe three. Every couple wants six. Six locations means four hours in a car and forty minutes of actual shooting at each, in whatever light happens to be there when you arrive. Two locations shot properly will always produce the better set.

    Mehrangarh Fort

    Old City

The scale is the point. Ramparts, courtyards and the drop to the blue city below give you three completely different backdrops inside one complex. Chokelao Bagh at the base is gentler and greener if you want something softer.

    Best time
First light, or the last hour before closing
    Getting there
    In the city

    Practical notes

Ticketed, with separate permission and a fee required for professional cameras and any styled shoot. Tripods are restricted in most areas. Apply at least two weeks ahead — longer in peak season.

    Toorji Ka Jhalra (the stepwell)

    Gulab Sagar

Symmetrical carved sandstone terraces that photograph beautifully from above and at water level. One of the few places in the city that looks equally good in flat light.

    Best time
Sunrise — it is busy with visitors and swimmers by 9 AM
    Getting there
    In the city

    Practical notes

Free and public, which is exactly why timing matters. Get there at first light or you will be sharing the frame. The surrounding steps are uneven and slippery when wet — not the place for tall heels.

    The Blue City lanes (Navchokiya)

    Old City

The indigo walls throw soft blue light back onto faces, which is genuinely flattering and impossible to replicate. Avoid blue and turquoise outfits here — you will disappear into the wall.

    Best time
6–8 AM, before the lanes fill
    Getting there
    In the city

    Practical notes

These are people's homes, not a set. We shoot early, keep the group small, and always ask before setting up against someone's doorway. No permit needed, but courtesy is not optional.

    Jaswant Thada

    Near Mehrangarh

White marble that glows when the sun is low, set against the fort. The marble is thin enough in places to transmit light — the interior takes on a warm amber cast in late afternoon.

    Best time
Early morning, or late afternoon into golden hour
    Getting there
    In the city

    Practical notes

Ticketed with a separate professional photography fee. Quieter and far easier to work in than the fort. The lawns and the lake below are usually open.

    Mandore Gardens

    Mandore

Red sandstone cenotaphs among old trees. Green and shaded, which makes it the easiest location in the city to shoot in the middle of the day.

    Best time
    Morning, before it warms up
    Getting there
    9 km · 20 minutes

    Practical notes

Free public gardens, popular with families at weekends. Weekday mornings are much calmer. Watch for langurs — they are bold and will take anything shiny.

    Kaylana Lake

    Jaisalmer Road

The reliable sunset location in Jodhpur. Open water and rocky outcrops with a long uninterrupted western horizon, which is rarer here than you would expect.

    Best time
    The hour before sunset
    Getting there
    8 km · 20 minutes

    Practical notes

Small entry fee. Gets busy with sunset crowds at weekends — arrive an hour early to claim a spot on the rocks.

    Osian sand dunes

    Osian

Proper desert without the full Jaisalmer drive. Clean, uncluttered horizons and long shadows at either end of the day. Flowing fabric works exceptionally well here.

    Best time
Sunrise or the last 90 minutes of light
    Getting there
    65 km · 1 hour

    Practical notes

About an hour each way, so it needs to be planned as a half-day rather than squeezed between two other locations. Camel and jeep access can be arranged. Bring water — there is no shade.

    Umaid Bhawan Palace

    Cantt Area

Art Deco on a scale that has no real equivalent in India. The interiors and the lawn at dusk are what most couples booking a Jodhpur destination wedding have actually pictured.

    Best time
    Late afternoon into blue hour
    Getting there
    5 km · 15 minutes

    Practical notes

Access is restricted to hotel guests and confirmed event bookings. Shoots are arranged through the hotel and coordinated with their own events team. Not available for casual pre-wedding sessions.

    Rao Jodha Desert Rock Park

    Below Mehrangarh

Restored desert rock and native planting directly beneath the fort walls. Rugged and largely empty, and it gives you the fort as a backdrop without the fort's restrictions.

    Best time
    Early morning
    Getting there
    In the city

    Practical notes

Ticketed, with marked walking trails. Uneven volcanic rock underfoot — sensible shoes for the walking sections, changing into anything else at the location.

    Balsamand Lake & Palace

    Mandore Road

Mango and pomegranate groves around a twelfth-century artificial lake. Green, quiet and considerably cooler than the city in summer.

    Best time
    Late afternoon
    Getting there
    7 km · 15 minutes

    Practical notes

The lake and gardens are accessible; the palace itself is a heritage hotel and needs booking through them.

How to actually plan the day

Start before sunrise. In Jodhpur this is not a stylistic preference — between April and June the middle of the day is over 40°C and the light is flat and unusable. A 6 AM start in the blue city gets you empty lanes and soft light; by nine both are gone.

Then break. Shoot again from four until dusk. Two locations at either end of the day beats six locations spread across it, every time.

Sort permissions early. Mehrangarh and Jaswant Thada both need paperwork and a fee for professional shoots, and it is not something that can be arranged the day before. If you are working with us, we handle that liaison — but we still need the lead time.
